Alro Slatina’s workforce mobilizes against shutdown of aluminum production capacity – Aluminum Insider
The workforce of the Romanian aluminum smelter of Alro Slatina mobilized yesterday to protest against the management of the plant and its decision to operate at less than half of its capacity in the face of the high prices of the plant. ‘energy.
Representatives of the plant’s unions told local media that the high energy prices are the result of special interests and will eventually affect the entire Romanian market. They went on to say that the site’s 1,500 employees would likely find themselves out of work due to the reduction in production to 40 percent of its capacity.
“Employees of ALRO SA and employees of other companies who are directly or indirectly affected by the reduction in the production capacity of ALRO SA by closing 60% of the capacity and sending more than 1,500 employees on layoff will participate, ”union representatives said of the protests yesterday. .
Alro management has chosen to shut down three of its five aluminum production lines for the entirety of 2022 at the end of last year. Management gave their word to the workforce that there would be no layoffs, but that promise was strongly questioned by unions at the site.
“The mafia created around electricity and gas resources does not stop its speculative actions, thus irreversibly destroying the Romanian industry”, estimated the union representatives of the factory. “We inform you that not only are we in the same dire situation, but the whole industry in Romania is in a deep coma in which it is fighting relentlessly against the clutches of electricity and gas speculators. Hundreds of thousands of employees will lose their jobs because of up to 50 “tricks” who believe themselves to be the masters of Romanian electricity and gas. ”
Union leaders went on to say that they had yet to hear several government agencies talk about the shutdown despite repeated demands.
