BALCO Reduces Carbon Footprint With Next Generation Technology, Auto News, ET Auto
Balconagar Korba: Bharat Aluminum Company (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminum producer, is a strong supporter of using next-generation technology to make its manufacturing process sustainable and reduce its carbon footprint.
BALCO has reduced its energy consumption in its “vessel line 1” at its foundry in Chhattisgarh to 12,862 KWH / MT, which corresponds to global standards.
This tank line thus has the best performance among the tank lines in India and the Gulf countries in terms of specific energy consumption and has thus considerably reduced its carbon footprint. A foundry is a factory where aluminum is produced by the smelting process, which involves extracting it from its oxide, alumina.
A potline is a long building, or collection of buildings, that contains a series of “pots”, or tall ones. electrolytic cells, in which aluminum is made. The company has achieved this benchmark by deploying a smart combination of high-end technologies and local innovations.
Speaking about reducing BALCO’s carbon footprint in its manufacturing process, Abhijit Pati, CEO and Director of BALCO, said: “We are committed to sustainability and in all of our business areas using cutting-edge technology and judicious use of resources. BALCO was one of the first to adopt in India to explore the field of smart technologies for increased operational efficiency. These investments and skills further strengthen the culture of safety and productivity that we have meticulously fostered across the organization. We are aware of our responsibility to build a stronger and more sustainable future and, therefore, we actively explore innovations that help reduce the carbon footprint as early as possible in the creation process. We are securing a future-ready organization for a self-reliant India. “
The company has gradually integrated smart technologies and modified the design of its tank lines to reduce its specific energy consumption by using a graphite pot with thermal modeling and other digital interventions. The company relentlessly encourages innovation and continuous improvement of its fusion technology.
BALCO’s specific energy consumption has been one of the lowest in the aluminum industries across the country. BALCO has also today reduced its specific water consumption by 170% compared to its previous specific water consumption levels, which is also one of the lowest among its peers. These figures are a testament to BALCO’s energetic environmental and energy conservation efforts that contribute to a greener and better planet.
BALCO has received several awards and honors for its environmental conservation efforts. For the year 2020, BALCO won the “CII Energy Efficiency Award”, the “Golden Peacock Sustainability Award” and the “CII HSE Excellence Award, Chhattisgarh”.
BALCO has also won the “International Green Apple Award”, the “CII Energy Excellence Award”, the “Sustainable Business of the Year Award”, the “National Award for Excellence in Energy Management” and the “Global Energy and Environment Environment Award” in recent years.
