Blackpink’s Rosé and IU make history with their first Platinum certifications in Korea
Just days ago, Gaon revealed this month’s list of albums and songs that performed well enough to reach special milestones in South Korea, earning platinum certifications (and more) from several ways. Six albums were named platinum for the first time and one was multiplied by four million, and these half-dozen tracks are two that are historically significant thanks to the musicians behind them.
Singer Blackpink Rosé and beloved IU are both collecting platinum album certifications in the country this week for their recent releases. Surprisingly, these are sort of the first solo women in South Korean history to do so.
In South Korea, an album is certified platinum after having sold 250,000 copies. It’s worth mentioning that Gaon, the same organization that shares the weekly music charts, didn’t start tracking and properly announcing certifications until 2018, so surely there are titles from many musicians released before that that would have happened. probably qualified for the honor, if he had existed at the time.
Rosé obtains her first platinum album certification with her first solo project R, a single album composed of only two tracks, “On The Ground” and “Gone”. The set was a big seller when it first came in, and in just a few short months it has already sold nearly half a million copies. As a member of the immensely popular Blackpink quartet, Rosé has already garnered four platinum certifications, with the group’s first full album. The album rapidly advancing to a million stature.
UI’s latest album Lilac was named platinum at the same time as Rosé’s R, so the two musicians share the same story. Lilac went straight to No.1 on the Gaon Albums chart, and it has continued to perform well since its release, with the songs on the project selling and playing exceptionally well for months.
Joining Rosé and IU in the new platinum group of albums in South Korea are recent releases from artists like Super Junior, ATEEZ and Stray Kids, as well as BTS, who are seeing their EP. Soul Map: Persona go from triple million to quadruple million. In doing so, the title of the septet only became the second outing in the country’s history to achieve this status.
