Nagpur: Workers at Koradi Thermal Power Station (KTPS) were stunned on March 10 after a decomposed body was found in one of the wagons carrying coal from a laundromat at Wani in Yavatmal district. The body was spotted while unloading coal.
Koradi Police Station staff led by ACP Santosh Khandekar and Senior Inspector Krishna Shinde managed to identify the deceased with a PayTM cash withdrawal slip in the pocket. Using the PayTM code mentioned on the slip, the cops had spotted a Wani agent. The officer saw photos of the body sent on WhatsApp.
Although the officer could not shed light, the identity of the deceased was established with another person identifying the body as that of Santosh Gomwar, 47, manager of Gupta Coal Washery in Wani.
Gomwar was last seen at his workplace on March 8. He had left the office after keeping the cell phone to charge it, saying he would be back soon. He was seen heading towards the train station, sources said. Gomwar had left for his night shift between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. It is learned that his colleagues were baffled as Gomwar did not return even after his service ended on March 9.
Known to be an alcohol addict, it was nothing new for the Gomwar family that Santosh would not return home for a day or two. Even as the family tried to assess the situation, the Nagpur police call shocked them.
It was also learned that the autopsy suggested a heavy deposit of coal dust in the nasal passages and also in the lungs. Death was caused by asphyxiation, the initial report revealed.
An accidental death was registered by Koradi Police and the case was handed over to Wani Police.
Initial investigation suggested that Gomwar and other workers often slept or rested in areas of the laundromat that were not covered by CCTV cameras. Police suspect Gomwar slept at one of these places from where the coal was lifted and loaded into the wagon for KTPS.
“The matter is being thoroughly investigated by Wani Police,” ACP Khandekar said.
