Cities across UK bid for Platinum Jubilee glory – Royal Central
Cities across the UK are finalizing offers for a very special Platinum Jubilee celebration – the chance to become a city.
City status will be granted in several locations across the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s reign and several high profile contenders are already claiming the award.
Southend-on-Sea in Essex, Medway in Kent, Swindon in Wiltshire and Dudley in the West Midlands have all confirmed that they will compete for town status, as have Newport on the Isle of Wight and Ballymena, in County Antrim. Bangor in County Down is considering an offer, as are Dumfries and the Welsh town of Wrexham.
Candidates have until December 8 to make their offers, but many of the more ambitious councils are already explaining why they think their regions should be designated as cities.
The government launched the competition on June 8, 2021 and has not confirmed how many places will earn the status. In 2012, for the Diamond Jubilee, four towns became towns with one chosen from each part of the UK – Chelmsford (England), Perth (Scotland), St. Asaph (Wales) and Armagh (Northern Ireland) ). However, this format was not highlighted for this competition.
City status is often granted for major royal celebrations. The Platinum Jubilee competition will be the first to be open to Crown Dependency areas and Overseas Territories.
Existing towns also have the option of applying for a Lord Mayoralty or Lord Provostship in Scotland. This is usually granted to long-standing towns and allows their civic leader to be known as Lord Mayor or Lord Provost.
The decision on which areas have received city status will be announced in 2022 as the Platinum Jubilee is well and truly beginning. Elizabeth II will mark the 70th anniversary of her reign on February 6, 1952 but will keep the date private as it is also the anniversary of the death of her father, King George VI. Celebrations of his seven decades as the Monarch will take place throughout the year, with major events taking place on a special weekend from June 2 to June 5, 2022.
