Coal Ridge and Basalt fall in 3A baseball regionals; Rifle hosts regional 4A on Monday after weather delays
The Coal Ridge High School baseball team led 3-2 heading into the seventh inning of the Titans 3A Regional against Kent Denver at Eaton on Sunday afternoon, before giving up two runs to the Sun Devils in the bottom half to take the 4th loss. -3. , ending their season.
Coal Ridge, seeded 17th, scored two runs in the second inning and one in the fifth, as freshman pitcher Ben Simons limited the No. 16 Sun Devils to two runs in six innings before giving up the runs in equality and green light. He had 11 strikeouts on the day.
Sophomore Austin Price had 2 RBIs for the Titans, and rookie Jackson Slade was 1-for-1 at home plate with and RBI.
Coal Ridge ends the season at 16-8. It was the last game in a Titans jersey for seniors Nolan Simpson and Boden Robbins.
In another Regional 3A playoff game on Sunday involving a team from the region, No. 21 Basalt fell to No. 12 Resurrection Christian 12-2, also on the road at Brush.
Meanwhile, Rifle High School’s Region 8 baseball playoff games were rescheduled for Monday in Rifle following a weekend snowstorm that left visiting teams unable to travel to play as originally scheduled for Saturday.
The Bears (19-4) arrive as the No. 2 seed overall, taking on No. 31 Evergreen (13-10) at 10 a.m. Monday at Rifle’s Deerfield Park. This will be followed by game No. 15 D’Evelyn (15-8) and No. 18 Northridge (14-9) at 12:30 p.m., and the two winners will meet at 3 p.m. for the right to qualify for the eight -4A team state tournament next week.
The Bears concluded the regular season as 4A Western Slope League runners-up at No. 1 seed Palisade, which hosted one of eight regional playoffs on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (23-2) won their opener 10-0 over No. 32 Aurora Central and beat No. 17 Falcon 13-3 to advance to the Round of 16.
