DL E&C and SK Ecoplant win European Steel Bridge Award
DL E&C announced on September 27 that it has won the European Convention on Steel Construction (ECCS) European Steel Bridge Award for the Canakkale Bridge, which was jointly completed with SK Ecoplant in March. The longest suspension bridge in the world crosses the Dardanelles Strait in the Turkish province of Canakkale.
DL E&C and SK Ecoplant beat more than 20 competitors to win the prestigious award, given every two years by the ECCS based on a comprehensive assessment of steel bridges across Europe.
The Canakkale Bridge is called an engineering marvel. It has a main span length of 2,023 meters (6,637 ft), breaking a previous record set by Japan’s Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (main span length: 1.991 km).
The main tower of the Canakkale Bridge is also the tallest in the world. At 334 meters, it is taller than the Eiffel Tower in France (320 meters) and the Tokyo Tower in Japan (333 meters). Moreover, it can withstand earthquakes and strong winds using various advanced methods.
DL E&C and SK Ecoplant completed the bridge under a build, operate and transfer (BOT) contract. They will operate the bridge for about 12 years before handing it over to the local government.
