State-owned company PT Krakatau Steel officially launched a new hot strip rolling mill on Tuesday, the second such facility for Indonesia’s leading steelmaker in nearly four decades, to expand its domestic market share.
After starting operations in May, the new strip mill was inaugurated on Tuesday by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in Banten. Krakatau Steel started its first hot rolling mill in 1983 under President Soeharto.
Krakatau Steel CEO Silmy Karim said on Tuesday that the new steel plant, which cost $ 521 million, has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of hot-rolled coil steel (HRC) .
Most of the production goes to the domestic automotive industry.
“We believe that national steel consumption will continue to grow in line with national infrastructure, industry and economic development,” he said.
