Malpas: Platinum Jubilee weekend plans to celebrate Queen’s reign
MALPAS will be hosting several events in June to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
These include the lighting of beacons on Castle Hill at 9.45pm on Thursday June 2 and a service of thanksgiving at St Oswald’s Church, Church Street on Friday June 3.
Photographs and clippings will be displayed in the community church in Malpas.
Resident Liane Smith said: “To get a sense of just how remarkable the Queen’s 70 years of service as monarch is, head to Malpas Community Church each afternoon to see a rolling display of clippings of newspapers from 1952.
“There’s also an exhibition of old photographs of the area and your opportunity to bring memorabilia to the ‘Coronation Roadshow’.
During this time, the Malpas Flower Club will organize an exhibition of flowers as decorations and people will be able to enjoy the scarecrow across the city.
On Saturday, June 4, celebrations will begin at noon and include a fireworks display at 10 p.m.
Ms Smith added: “On Saturday June 4, the festivities begin at midday with a parade along the High Street followed by a fair and various events in the recreation ground including a 1950s fashion show, an exhibition vintage vehicles, a tug of war and a dog show.
“The evening ends with a band and cash bar plus fireworks at 10 p.m..”
The next day there will be even more events, including a fun race, and people are encouraged to participate.
Ms Smith said: “On Sunday we have a fun 5k run in the morning, followed by ‘wizard chess’ sessions while everyone enjoys their picnic, scavenger hunt and signing of a platinum tree.”
“There’s room for everyone and plenty of stalls, raffles, a souvenir program and great prizes.
“Don’t watch everything on TV, come be part of the fun.”
