Novelis to create closed-loop automotive aluminum with Nissan UK plant – Aluminum Insider
Atlanta-based rolled aluminum company Novelis said this week that this is Nissan’s new aluminum body plate for its all-new Qashqai SUV.
Novelis said the partnership will create a closed-loop recycling system in Europe. The company will supply Nissan with aluminum foil for the hood and doors of the C-segment SUV.
Nissan’s use of aluminum accounted for 46 pounds of the 132 pounds shaved from the previous model. Novelis says this is further evidence of the tendency for automakers to incorporate aluminum into doors and hoods in order to reduce overall weight.
Michael Hahne, VP Automotive, Novelis Europe, said in a press release that no other company is able to offer the aluminum body sheet it supplies to car manufacturers.
“We are excited to provide Nissan with sustainable aluminum body sheet solutions as they continue to design lighter, more fuel efficient vehicles with lower lifecycle emissions. Novelis is uniquely positioned to meet the growing demand for automotive aluminum given its unmatched global footprint and its ability to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. We look forward to working with Nissan as they continue to embrace more aluminum and increase their recycling capabilities.
Novelis will supply Nissan’s assembly line in Sunderland, UK, with aluminum sheets from its plant in Nachterstedt, Germany. It will also close the aluminum loop by shipping scrap aluminum from the UK plant to Novelis recycling centers on the continent.
Novelis is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Ltd. from Bombay. Based in Atlanta, the company accounts for nearly half of Hindalco’s consolidated sales. The world’s largest aluminum recycler, Novelis operates in ten different countries, employs approximately eleven thousand people and reported net sales of US $ 11.2 billion last fiscal year.
