Outrage at Epsom Derby after surprise fireworks display in honor of Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee included a huge fireworks display on Saturday morning, but many onlookers thought it was a terrible idea. The fireworks came very shortly before the Epsom Derby horse race, and it was well within sight of the prized animals. Everyone from racing enthusiasts to animal rights activists worried about the impact of this confusing sound show on animals.

Fireworks erupted on the race track just before the start of the race, scattering red, white and blue smoke everywhere. As commentators were quick to point out online, even the best-trained horse is likely to lose his temper in the face of an outburst like that. Many feared it would impact the results of the race, prompting complaints from sports fans, managers and players, among others. Meanwhile, those who cared about the well-being of the horses themselves thought it made the cruelty worse.

The race continued regardless and victory went to the horse Desert Crown with jockey Sir Michael Stoute. However, this was not the last interruption suffered by the race. According to a report by the Daily Mail, six women rushed onto the track as part of an animal rights protest. They were representing a group called Animal Rebellion, and they were apprehended by police before anyone could be harmed.
