Providing COVID treatment to contract workers at Visakha Steel General Hospital: forum
The Northern Andhra Development Forum (FDNA) has requested the treatment of contract workers affected by COVID-19 at the Visakha General Steel Hospital (VSGH).
In a letter to the President and CEO (CMD) of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), FDNA Secretary General A. Aja Sarma recalled that there were around 16,000 contract workers, employed in different departments of the steelworks. They worked on par with regular employees and contributed to the growth of the plant, he said.
It is no exaggeration to conclude that, without their hard work, the factory could not have achieved many milestones, whether in production, productivity or revenue, added Mr. Aja Sarma.
“The VSP achieved a record turnover during the pandemic and this would not have been possible without the contribution of the contractors. They were doing their best services at the factory despite the pandemic situation and many of them fell ill from COVID-19. Unfortunately, they are denied treatment and admission to VSGH, which is not only unfair but also inhumane, ”he said.
Mr. Aja Sarma noted that the prestige of the VSP will be jeopardized when the factory, which supplies oxygen to various states and saves lives, cannot give proper treatment to its own workers. The contract workers are also involved in the various positions of the general hospital itself. Surprisingly, they provide services to many patients and at the same time they have been denied treatment in turn, he said.
He called on the CMD to immediately consider treating VSGH contractors along with other staff members as a primary responsibility.
