Victorious Sailors on the Coal Ridge Road
NEW CASTLE – With a victory on Route 24-6 at Coal Ridge, the Steamboat Springs High School football team is now 3-1. The last time the Mariners started a season 3-1 or better was in 2009, the most recent year the team had a winning season.
The Sailors started one of their first offensive possessions of the game in a prime position due to an interception by junior Cade Gedeon. Senior quarterback Jake Hamric pushed the offense up the field and his team sat at the end zone gate on the third down. His pass was intercepted.
Steamboat didn’t spend time kicking each other. The defense made three big saves, failing to allow a fourth down, forcing Coal Ridge to kick. The Sailors blocked the kick, which flew up and then down into the end zone where junior Austin Moore recovered the ball to score.
The Titans stopped Steamboat at the 35-yard line in the third to finish the third. After changing direction, the sailors chose to hit a basket. Second-year kicker Charlie Reisman stunned the crowd by scoring a 45-yard field goal to give the Sailors a 10-0 lead.
Coal Ridge nearly scored in the second quarter as his last play ended in a catch inside the 1-yard line, but the receiver was knocked down and the clock showed triple zeros.
Steamboat charged the pitch in the third. The drive included a first try from Hamric, as well as a ball to Gedeon for another first try. Full of confidence, Steamboat pulled off a sleight of hand. Hamric handed it over to Gedeon, who used his quarterback skills from the past two years to find second-year wide receiver Beck Vanderbosch to win the first.
Inside the 10, Hamric passed to senior Ben Bogan at the back of the end zone, who returned the ball for the touchdown. Reisman’s kick was good, bringing the score to 17-0 for the Marines with 7:56 left in the third.
After holding on all night, the Steamboat defense finally fell into disuse. A few penalties against the Sailors and some big plays put the Titans inside the 20-yard line. A 16-yard run from senior Jon Bolitho put Coal Ridge on the board with 2:30 left in the third quarter. With the conversion unsuccessful, Steamboat led 17-6.
It was not safe enough in the minds of the sailors. So the offense got to work and ended up with the 10-yard line as the clock hit 20 seconds. The boys in red and white lined up and got another game before the end of the quarter.
Hamric rolled to the right and sent the ball flying towards Gedeon, who took two steps into the end zone to score with six seconds left. Reisman continued his hot streak with the extra point. At the start of the fourth, Steamboat led 24-6.
With just under three minutes to go, Reisman attempted another 45-yard field goal, which missed a few inches from the amount.
Coal Ridge recovered the ball and progressed down the field, but Moore intercepted the ball, making sure the Titans didn’t score again.
